How to find your money leaks in 5 minutes

Money Leak Finder turns one bank statement into a ranked list of monthly leaks and a 12-month savings number. No bank login. Your transactions never leave your browser.

What you'll need

  • One bank or credit-card statement covering 1–3 months.
  • A CSV, XLSX, or XLS file — or the ability to copy-paste rows.
  • About 5 minutes.

Step 1 — Export a statement from your bank

Log in to your online banking and look for Export, Download transactions, or Statements. Choose CSV when offered — it works best. XLSX and XLS also work.

Tip: a longer date range gives sharper results. 1–3 months is the sweet spot for spotting recurring charges.

No CSV option? Copy rows straight out of the statement view and paste them into the box on the home page — we auto-detect columns.

Step 2 — Upload or paste on the home page

On the home page, drop your file into the upload box or paste rows into the text area. We auto-detect common column names — Date, Description, Amount — even if your bank uses slightly different labels or extra columns.

Supported today:

  • CSV files (.csv)
  • Excel files (.xlsx, .xls)
  • Pasted rows in any common shape (CSV, tab-separated, with $ signs, extra columns)

PDF statements are not supported yet — export as CSV instead, or paste the rows.

Step 3 — Read your ranked leaks

Each card shows a category, what it costs you per month, and what stopping (or trimming) it would save over the next 12 months. Cards are sorted by biggest impact first, so start at the top.

Click a card to see every transaction behind it. Recurring charges are flagged so you can tell a one-off dinner from a subscription that keeps hitting your card.

Step 4 — Take action & track what you've cancelled

  • Download CSV inside a leak — handy if you want to send it to a partner or your accountant.
  • Mark as cancelled to watch your running 12-month savings tick up as you plug each leak.
  • Wrong category? Use the dropdown next to a transaction to reassign it — we remember your choice for next time.

Step 5 — Re-run after every new statement

Once you've made changes, upload next month's statement to see the leaks shrink. Click Upload next statement at the top of the results screen.

Editing rules

Click Edit rules on the results screen to fine-tune how leaks are detected:

  • Adjust the monthly threshold for a category — how much you need to spend before it's flagged as a leak. Useful if, say, $200/month on groceries is normal for you but would be flagged by default.
  • Reassign a merchant to a different category — for example, move Uber Eats from Transport to Food Delivery.
All rules and overrides are saved on this device only. Nothing syncs to a server.

Privacy in one line

Parsing, categorization, and leak detection all run in your browser. Your transactions are never uploaded, stored, or shared. Close the tab and it's gone.

Troubleshooting

  • "We could not read this file" — make sure it's saved as CSV (not Excel). In Excel or Google Sheets: File → Download → CSV.
  • Very few leaks show up — your file may only cover a few days. Try a longer range (1–3 months).
  • A charge looks miscategorised — use the Wrong category? dropdown inside the leak, or open Edit rules and reassign the merchant.
  • PDF statement — export as CSV from your bank, or copy-paste the rows into the text box on the home page.
